How Chelsea made it clear they’re happy to sell €18m signing for a profit

Sometimes the briefs that journalists get from football clubs are subtle, and something they’re obvious.

Today’s effort was in the latter category as Chelsea responded to rumours linking them with Caoimhin Kelleher of Liverpool. No sooner had the word done the rounds than there was a rebuttal which came from all sides.

All of them said pretty much the same thing – that the Blues aren’t interested in the Liverpool goalie. They also towed the same line that everyone at the club has over Robert Sanchez – that everyone believes in him and his potential.

They both mention future prospects Mike Penders and Filip Jorgensen, signed this summer, on top of faith in Robert Sanchez.

But neither mentions Djordje Petrovic. The Serbia international goalkeeper was our first choice for most of last season, but was moved out on loan in the summer to Strasbourg.

The fact that he was dumped out on loan after spending the best part of a season as our first choice should have been enough to tell us that the sporting directors don’t really rate him or see him as part of the future. Even the signing of Jorgensen was probably the writing on the wall.

The idea will likely be to hope he continues playing well for Strasbourg and Serbia, and then sell him this summer. Sources wrote that we were considering selling him last summer for a profit on the €16m + €2m we paid for him, and if he continues having a good season we can pull it off in 2025.
