Pundit names Chelsea star who won’t be “happy” if one thing continues to happen this season

Robbie Mustoe has claimed Enzo Fernandez won’t be happy with being in the side one game then out of it the next one.

The Argentine returned to the starting line-up against Leicester on Saturday and gave a timely reminder of his quality as he put in a man of the match performance.

Fernandez got the assist for Nicolas Jackson’s opener and scored the all important second goal, whilst he also perhaps surprisingly covered more ground than anyone else on the pitch.

Mustoe shares his Fernandez concern

It’s been difficult for Fernandez at times this season and his start against Leicester was his first in the league since early October, although Maresca has insisted he has full trust in the 23-year-old.

The World Cup winner lost his place to Romeo Lavia for the defeat against Liverpool and was subsequently on the bench for the next three league games after that.

Maresca’s decision to go with him over Lavia for the game against the Foxes more than paid off and it will be interesting to see if he retains his place for the visit of Aston Villa on Sunday.

Former player turned pundit Mustoe believes Fernandez won’t be happy if he’s in the side one week and out of it the next.

“As a world cup winner, highly regarded and a very, very expensive midfield player, I don’t think he’s going to be happy with being in one game out the next,” he told The 2 Robbie Podcast.

Mustoe has a point and it does feel like Maresca is going to decide on a game by game basis whether it will be Lavia or Fernandez playing alongside Moises Caicedo.

Every player wants to start on a regular basis and Fernandez will be no different, but with the amount of games Chelsea face this season, along with Lavia’s fitness issues he will start plenty of Premier League matches.

Fernandez is unlikely to be involved against Heidenheim in the Conference League on Thursday, but he will have every right to be disappointed if he finds himself on the bench against Villa on Sunday.
