Stephen Warnock highlighted the performance of Marc Cucurella as Chelsea recorded a resounding win against Southampton on Wednesday evening.
The Blues ran riot at St Marry’s as they won 5-1 to move above Arsenal on goal difference and into second place, seven points behind leaders Liverpool.
Chelsea had five separate goal scorers with Axel Disasi, Christopher Nkunku, Noni Madueke, Cole Palmer and Jadon Sancho all on the score sheet.
Warnock impressed by Cucurella
Maresca hit the rotation button for the first time in the league this season as he made seven changes from the team that beat Aston Villa.
Cucurella, Cole Palmer, Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo were the only players to keep their places from last Sunday as Chelsea flexed their embarrassment of riches.
It wasn’t all plain sailing as the Saints did equalise, with Maresca revealing there were things he wasn’t happy with about Chelsea’s performance.
Cucurella, who put in another good performance has been one of Chelsea’s best performers this season, with Troy Deeney admitting he was surprised at how good the Spaniard’s been.
Chelsea will have been disappointed to not keep a clean sheet, but Warnock stated he was impressed by Cucurella.
“I’ve been really impressed by him, he’s improved so much,” he told Amazon Prime.
“Often moves into that midfield position, but what’s really improved has been his 1v1 defending.”
There’s no denying Cucurella’s improvement this season and right now he’s arguably the best left back in the league and one of the best in the world.
The 26-year-old has completely transformed his situation at Chelsea, with Jason Cundy stating he’s now one of the first names on the team sheet.
Cucurella was taken off towards the end to give him a rest ahead of Sunday’s London derby against Tottenham, and the Blues will be hoping he puts in another impressive performance.
