Chelsea in “pole position” to make signing – there’s an important reason it won’t happen this month

GiveMeSport’s exclusive yesterday claimed that Chelsea are in the race to sign Marc Guehi, along with Newcastle, Man U and Liverpool.

After some really solid years at Crystal Palace and a successful campaign with England last summer, we can see why the talk of a big money move has ramped up. Eventually the Eagles will want to cash in, and this seems like the prime opportunity.

The discussion of a January move seems improbable though – Palace are fighting desperately against relegation, and almost no amount of money they might be offered seems likely to convince them to sell a key part of their team at this stage.

The £75m sums being mentioned are big money – but not nearly enough to get you to risk your Premier League status for. Whether they go down or not, there will still be plenty of interest in Guehi in the summer, and there is just no need to sell now.

GMS claims that Chelsea are in “pole position” to sign Guehi because none of his other suitors have the money to pay as much as they do. But with a pretty settled squad, it also feels unlikely that Chelsea suddenly start spending big.

We could do with another top quality central defender, and we’re huge fans of Guehi, especially as a former Chelsea youth player. But a January move seems incredibly unlikely to us given the costs involved. In the summer we will have a chance to clear space in our squad, and raise some funds by making sales.

Just because we’re capable of making a big money signing doesn’t mean we will. That doesn’t seem to be the plan for this window, and we’d be far more hopeful about a summer move.

  1. Guhei is just average ,slow not the great in the air, not worth 40m let alone more, much better out there, our whole back line needs changing as we wont win the league with that lot.

  2. IF MARC GUHEI IS THAT SLOW THEN LETS GET ARAUJO OR ANOTHER ACTIVE LEAD DEFENDER EVEN THOUGH IT WILL COST CHELSEA FC
