Chelsea pushing to complete surprise deadline day signing which is set to leave fans confused

Chelsea are continuing in their efforts to try and sign St Etienne midfielder Mathis Amougou before the transfer window shuts at 11pm on Monday.

The window is into the final few hours, and it appears Chelsea will be busy as they look to try and bring at least one new signing in, and finalise a number of exits.

Ben Chiwell and Carney Chukwuemeka are currently finalising loan moves to Crystal Palace and Borussia Dortmund respectively, whilst AC Milan are pushing to sign Joao Felix.

With an attacker looking unlikely to arrive despite being linked with the likes of Mathys Tel, Alejandro Garnacho and Liam Delap, Chelsea have now turned their attention to signing a midfielder.

The Blues lack depth in the middle of the park due to Romeo Lavia’s injury issues, whilst Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall seemingly isn’t trusted by Enzo Maresca.

Andrey Santos and Lesley Ugochukwu are both on loan and it seems that Chelsea aren’t prepared to recall either of the duo.

Chelsea made an enquiry earlier in the window for Juventus’ Douglas Luiz, whilst they also had an enquiry knocked back by Manchester City for Nico O’Reilly.

However, the club are working on a deal to bring a midfielder in and have identified Amougou as a player of interest.

L’Equipe have reported the Blues are continuing their efforts to sign the teenager, but as of yet no precise figures for a potential deal have been mentioned, despite negotiations between the clubs.

The report adds that if a deal can be reached Chelsea will send Amougou on loan to Strasbourg to continue his development.

Amougou is a France under-20 international and has made 17 appearances in Ligue 1 this season, whilst he’s under contract at St Etienne until 2026.

This is a move that if it does go through is unlikely to excite fans, whilst it would also do nothing to address the lack of depth in midfield currently.
