OFFICIAL: Chelsea complete €15m midfielder signing and already have development plan ready

It’s taken all night, but Chelsea have finally confirmed the signing of Mathis Amougou in a move which really came from nowhere.

The central midfielder was mentioned in a Tweet by Fabrizio Romano earlier this week, and pretty much the next thing we heard about him came 24 hours ago when the deal was being talked about as done. It’s taken a while for the details to be sorted and to get the midfielder to London for his press photos, but clearly it was all tied up before last night’s deadline.

The club’s official website reveals the former St Etienne midfielder, who had broken into their first team this year, has signed an 8 year contract and will go straight into the first team squad.

The fee is reported by other sources at around €15m.

As you’d expect, Mathis was glowing when asked about getting a huge move to the Premier League:

“I’m very happy. It’s an honour for me to sign for such a big club like Chelsea. They believe in young players and the process they have in place to develop us is fantastic,” the midfielder said.

There is a widespread belief that Amougou will stay with the cub for the rest of this season just get used to his surroundings at Cobham, but will next season be sent to Strasbourg on loan to replace Andrey Santos, who will come back to play in Chelsea’s first team. That seems to make sense.

There are mixed reviews from France about his ability and potential, but we will reserve our judgment until we’ve seen him play.

Quite apart from Santos, we do wonder where this leaves Lesley Ugochukwu, the last teenage central midfielder France youth international we signed.
