Enzo Maresca took his weekend press conference last night following the post-Legia defeat presser, so all of the answers were very much in the same context of looking back at a really stinging defeat.
Asked whether he felt he still had the full support of the ownership, Maresca launched into the standard defence he’s used all year, especially recently as the pressure has risen: pointing to the struggles of the last few years, and pointing to the fact that his team have been in the top four all year.
“In the last two years, Chelsea have been ZERO times in the top four, top five,” the manager said.
“We’ve spent all season in the Champions League spots. We are in a semi-final of a European competition. Why now do we need to change something? I don’t have any doubts about what we are doing, in the way we are doing it.”
“For different reasons we had some bad moments or some setbacks like last night, during the season for sure. But that makes stronger for the future.”
Asked to confirm if he also felt that support “from the top” of the club, Maresca answered emphatically “absolutely, yes.”

Maresca’s excuses still don’t wash with us

We’ve already gone over why this excuse doesn’t wash with us. For one thing, it doesn’t matter where you are all season, it matter where you finish. If we keep losing we could well finish the season worse than
The idea that being in the Conference League semi finals is any defence is also a nonsense – Mauricio Pochettino made it to an EFL Cup final last year, and faced teams with bigger budgets in doing that than Maresca has faced in Europe.
