“Not good enough” – Maresca picks out two players for “mistakes” which cost his team

Enzo Maresca has just taken his post match press conference after Chelsea’s draw with Ipswich at home.

As you’d expect, there was a very negative vibe to the whole thing. What else can you expect? We dropped points last weekend against Brentford, and have really tough games to come. It was absolutely crucial to get a win today, but we fumbled it brutally.

Maresca was asked what went wrong for his team, who conceded two soft goals and looked so short of belief and motivation, especially in the first half:

“As I said at the beginning, it’s tough. Even in the first 20 minutes, at this stage of the season, against these kinds of teams, if you are able to score the first one, the game completely changes on your side,” the manager said.

“Unfortunately, we missed chances, and then we conceded. I think the team was not good enough in different things. This is where we need to take one step forward and react in the right way.

Pressed for more detail on where his team had let themselves down, Maresca pointed to the defensive errors in the first half:

“I think we started quite well, creating chances. Then when they scored the first goal, the game completely changed. The dynamic of the game, I think for 20-25 minutes until the first half, we were not good enough, especially defensively, because the two goals we conceded were from our mistake.”

He even named Enzo Fernandez and goalkeeper Robert Sanchez as culprits:

“I think both goals we conceded, both we can defend better, but if you analyse both goals, the first goal is from Enzo, long ball, lose the ball, we concede. Second one is goal kick, long ball, we concede.”

  1. Funny how the team was doing great until DECEMBER.
About the time until the manager gets his ides across to the team and they finally start doing what he wants.
And then it all goes to crap. So much for the managers ideas.

  2. the last 15 chelsea games are carbon copies of one unother: the same ponderous meaningless, deja vu style antifootball, same anticipation and result. what does maresca have to teach them. palmer is a fading one season wonder, jackson excelling at nerve shattering misses. defence is nonexistent, keeper, unreliable. nothing positive.
    heartbreaking to watch.

    1. Cannot believe how bad we have been,we have one of the best right backs in the country when fit and maresca plays him in midfield, we have a goalkeeper who time after time makes mistakes and he still plays him, palmer does not look the same player, I am sure with a different manager this team would play better, tosin is clumsy and he keeps changing left backs and playing gusto there it’s crazy, things need to change and we need to somehow get rid of some of these wasters if anybody would have them that is, sanchez nkunku, tosin, mudryk that would be a start.

  3. Maresca and his excuse 5/6 you start tosin and cowill chaloba 3defender when we have James I swear your decision put this team in problem pls!!! If you don’t know how to manage Big team pls resign.. don’t start that useless basket goalkeeper Sanchez again

  4. All the best players were sold or loaned out and replaced with a load of youngsters there is a lot of truth in the previous coment
We need a coach / manager with experience that knows how to manage a team correctly not guess work.

  5. I have said from the beginning that this manager is just not good enough for chelsea, why we got him i don’t know and I have to blame the people at the top. Potter wasn’t good enough, so why did they do the same thing, by getting someone who hasn’t managed at a top club, why?

  6. Enzo Maresca is also a problem to our team,he left out team he likes of James and gusto on bench thus we conceded those goals,The technicals also deserves a big blame,hw can yu allow sanchez and Nkuku play Chelsea team.

  7. Maresca desperately hinting it’s players playing the long ball that caused the loss. You would think he doesn’t like a long ball but prefers short passes from the back, no matter how much extra pressure that puts on the defence and how easy it is for the opposition. Not only are Maresca’s tactics not working, they are tedious and boring. The sooner he is shown the door, along with the SDs, the better for the club.

  8. Why play chabolah at right back when he has reece ,gusto & ARTICHPONG ON BENCH & ALLSO KEEP GIVING KNUNKO MINUTES WHEN HE DOES NOTHING 4 THE TEAM.

  9. hes giving excuses . He should be sacked for being naive. You need stability at the back, but rotates almost every game.
Gusto is not going to score even he overlap
Your captain was on the bench. Cant play 2 games per week. Why did he played in the Conference, when facing Ipswich is a must win game. Miscalculation because he cant calculate. Simple.
    please sacked him.
No CL, good players will not come to Chelsea. Palmer, James, Fenandes may want to play with a decent coach. How naive can you be when you rested 5 important players for game that you MUST win

    1. Main problem is Enzo Fernandez. He is always far away from Caicedo hence leaving defenders exposed.
Recall towards the end of last season, Romeo Lavia played alongside Caicedo when Fernandez got injured and they won almost all matches until when Fernandez recovered and we started dropping points.
Drop Fernandez and use Amougo if Lavia is still unavailable.
Chelsea midfield is not balanced, help me and be keen watching when Chelsea is playing. You will see Caicedo struggling alone there

  10. Really I don’t say our team is weak, we are soo strong even we had potential to beat Ipswich but our players focused on wanting to score which led to a bit lack of defense that’s what resulted the Ipswich first goal and congratulation that we managed a very massive comeback

  11. I think the coach is not serious. He has it all but,
    1. He doesen’t have 1st 11.
    2. His CB is not always good yet we have colwil and we also have the good right back like Gushto who is always on bench.
    3. He always does mix up on his midfield yet we have good players. It’s much known that we in shortfall of strikers we should utilise what we have. We have young stars like George who is always on bench yet everytime he gets in he performs well.

  12. Let the coach stop talking much instead of solving the problem,we all the quality. I’m wondering how we are going to perform in coming games if we fail to get points from a team like Ipswich and Brentford. If we fail to get champions League spot next season, let him ( maresca leave our team).

  13. An elementary coach seeing himself as a world class coach. Until we change this mediocre coach this is how things will be. If your coach is clueless what do you expect? you have both right backs on bench but chooses to play a center back rather. Who does that ? Maresca and Robbert Sanchez are the problems of Chelsea.
