Source: Bargain winger is seen as a “risk worth taking” by Chelsea transfer chiefs

News from top sources like Fabrizio Romano that striker Liam Delap is going to join Chelsea within the next few days have dominated the headlines in the last 24 hours, but there are other moves going on behind the scenes too.

Sancho’s future now top of Chelsea’s agenda

One major decision that needs to be made in the next few days is over the future of Jadon Sancho. The winger is on loan from Manchester United, and with the season over it’s now decision time. Do Chelsea activate the £25m clause to make that move permanent, or do they pay the £5m penalty to send him back?

Sancho has divided opinion a little in his season at Chelsea – there’s a good player in there, and he’s had his moments (like his superb goal in the Conference League final this week). But there have also been disappointing games, and he certainly didn’t establish himself as an undroppable starter over the course of the season.

When you combine that with the fact that Estevao Willian is arriving this summer and Geovany Quenda next summer, plus rumour of another top tier wing signing this summer, it’s a tough call.

The I’s report on Delap has a long section on Sancho and his potential move. They say that their sources have said Maresca was “won over by some recent performances” and that Chelsea “may reconsider” their decision to send Sancho back.

“£25m for a player of his talent is seen as a risk worth taking” by Chelsea, and that makes total sense.

It’s going to be an interesting few days, with a lot of decisions like this needing to be made soon, as contracts and clauses tick into the new league year and the Club World Cup approaches.

  1. Buying him at the price is the easy part. From what I understand the issue is his wages. Utd were rumoured to be paying him £300,000 a week (with Chelsea pay half during his loan) Chelsea will not want to pay him that much which means a big drop in his salary. Will he accept that is the question ………

  2. Send him back to his club. He doesn’t fit in the system . Selfish with the ball like Noni and Raheem. Sell them all.
