Where do Chelsea need to strengthen?

With a Europa Conference League final to play and qualification for next season’s Champions League a distinct possibility, Chelsea’s 2024-25 campaign is on course to finish in triumph.

And on First.com, who list the best football bookmakers, you can find the best odds to back the Blues to land a coveted top-five Premier League finish.

But while Enzo Maresca’s side look set to improve upon a disappointing season under Mauricio Pochettino a year ago, the current term has been one of mild progress, rather than perfection.

If Chelsea hope to challenge for the top prizes at home and in Europe next season, they’ll need to strengthen in these three key areas over the summer.

Striker

Nicolas Jackson started the 2024-25 campaign brightly and looked like he could be the long-term answer for Chelsea up front.

But the 23-year-old’s form has tailed off drastically, with just three goals in his last 17 appearances and a mediocre return of 10 strikes from 28 Premier League games.

Long-time target Victor Osimhen is reportedly still desired at Stamford Bridge. The Nigerian has scored 33 goals in 37 games on loan at Galatasaray this season and looks set to leave Napoli on a permanent basis in the very near future.

Other reported targets include RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko and Canadian forward Jonathan David, who will be a free agent this summer when his contract with Lille expires.

Centre-back

According to Sky Sports News, Chelsea are in the market for a central defender this summer.

Their defensive record has improved dramatically this season, with 43 goals conceded in 36 games, down from a whopping 63 shipped in 38 outings last term. But they are still not as formidable at the back as the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal.

The Stamford Bridge side appear set to miss out on top target Dean Huijsen, with Real Madrid closing in on a £50million deal for the Bournemouth star.

But other players said to be on Chelsea’s radar include former Cobham academy graduate Marc Guehi and Ajax youngster Jorrel Hato.

Goalkeeper

It’s the one position more than any other that the Blues just can’t seem to get right.

Robert Sanchez has underwhelmed since arriving from Brighton two years ago and Filip Jorgensen, a £20m signing from Villarreal last summer, has done little to stake a claim to the No.1 spot.

According to One Football, Chelsea will enter the transfer market again after the season in an attempt to solve their goalkeeping issue, with a four-man shortlist made up of Gregor Kobel of Dortmund, Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kellher, James Trafford of Burnley and Lille’s Lucas Chevalier.
