The last two positions Enzo Maresca doesn’t have fixed in his team to face Crystal Palace

Two games in one weekend, have given Chelsea fans plenty to think about, especially with the Premier League kick off just days away now.

Enzo Maresca’s team looked superb in wins over Bayer Leverkusen and AC Milan over the weekend, and have ramped expectations even higher. The new players look great, the momentum from last season has continued, and there seem to be no physical issues.

While the manager used a variety of players and a boatload of subs through the 180 minutes played, it was pretty clear what direction his thinking is going in terms of the first team.

There are some players who have their starting place fixed from last season. Then there are others who have made themselves indispensable at the Club World Cup or in these two friendlies.

The majority of the team looks set now, there are only a couple of areas of uncertainty.

One of those is in defence, where an injury to Levi Colwill has created major question marks.

He was the only fixture last year, so with him out of the picture it’s uncertain who either of the two central players will be. All of the current options have the chance to lock down the position, and a new player could yet be signed.

Wingers battle to play opposite Neto

The other question is out wide, where there are so many good options. We would imagine that Pedro Neto has one side locked down, given he’s in good form and is really trusted by Maresca after a year working together.

But on the other side, we could see Jamie Gittens, Estevao Willian or even Cole Palmer moved wide to allow Romeo Lavia to play as an extra midfielder. Both of the new guys had superb moments in the friendlies, and right now it’s feel neck and neck.

  1. This is not very well written.

Currently the RW back up option is estevao behind Neto. Estevao can also play in the 10 as a back up to palmer. Gittens and JP can play on the left so i cant imagine seeing either neto, estevao or palmer on the left to be honest. More likely to be George if he stays.

Lavia is also injured and we havent heard any report or seen him training since Benfica in the CWC.

    Poor research from the journo.

  2. Yeah , there’s urgent need to sign a new centre back plus an attacking forward only for now.

This will of course help to further boost our previously lost confidence.
I remembered during the time of Jose Mourinho any football club vs Chelsea fc,will firstly accept defeat preceding the match itself.Chelsea fc was very intimidating in all wings & positions.Wining football matches was our birth right & this was not negotiable.
