Enzo Maresca’s explosive comments on Saturday night have generated a lot of chatter, mainly because people don’t know exactly what he meant.
He was asked more about it today, but basically refused to elaborate or explain. That’s not helped matters – speculation is still running wild about what he meant.
Maresca suffers from club division
Simon Jordan was on TalkSport, and gave his take on what it all meant. He seems to think there’s a division within the ownership about how the team should be run, and that dispute is frustrating the manager:
“There’s a school of thought, that I am led to believe, that there are differing agendas about what this team should be capable of doing and who should be playing,” Jordan said.
“If he’s been caught in a position of differing agendas, I think he’s got a fair point – ‘if you want to win things, you’ve got to give me experienced players alongside young players’. If he’s got these views, he’s not well served in putting them in the public domain. I don’t think there’s a bigger job for Enzo Maresca than Chelsea.”
This is an interesting angle on things, and we’d have to agree it makes sense. Maresca feels he’s being hung out to dry by being given a young and inexperienced squad which isn’t capable of competing on two fronts, while some elements at the club still want them to win everything.

Chelsea’s performances of late haven’t been amazing – but they’re trending in the right direction according to the stats, which show their defence tightening up and some improvements in terms of xG too.
Malo Gusto should get a rest tomorrow night – but he’s also a vitally important player for this team given his versatility. Enzo Maresca spoke about his usage in midfield in one of the more interesting answers from the press conference.
I think basically the SD’s are saying we bought you all these players and you aren’t using them and then you’re not winning the games we expect to either.
On Maresca’s side he’s over cautious on some players and over dogmatic on his tactics but – and it’s a big but, they hired him to be the coach.
The two SD’s have their own agenda and think they should be dictating the way games are played.
Blueco seem happy with Maresca for now so they should be telling the SD’s to lay off. They’re a pair of clowns anyway with very little experience in the role.
