Enzo Maresca has had a very odd week.
After a run of bad results he’s won two on the spin – but there’s more focus on his comments after game last weekend than there is on the improvement in his team.
His Chelsea team beat Cardiff 3-1 last night, and post game the coach started by saying he was “very happy.”
But as journalists asked later on when they pressured him, he didn’t look happy at all. In fact, he looks tired and frustrated.
Maresca insists he’s happy

“No, no. I’m happy, I’m happy” the coach insisted.
“Right now we have three hours [journey] to Cobham. [On that journey] I will watch two Newcastle games. There is no time [to rest]… the staff are going to be focused on the next one, Newcastle. So we’re going to prepare that.
“You cannot imagine how happy I am for the players. Because it’s another semi final for them, for the fans, for everyone.”
He’s trying to say he doesn’t look happy because he’s got more work to come – but we all know the real reason is much deeper than that. It’s quite funny how he’s taken this leaf out of his old mentor Pep Guardiola’s book – saying he’s “so happy” without even trying to sound like he means it.
You can see his actual reaction and the conversation in the clip from Hayters embedded here:
Reporter: "Earlier you said you were very happy. You don't look super happy… there's a smile!" 😅
Maresca: "I'm happy, I'm happy. Now we have three hours until we arrive at Cobham. I will watch two Newcastle games [in that time]." 🤯 pic.twitter.com/iL5cXWAY7X

In other news…
Santos also spoke after the game about his process of coming to Chelsea and how he had been inspired by Brazilians who went before him. We don’t like the sound of his sleepless week, however!
Joao Pedro has played a lot of games for Chelsea now and it’s fair to say the overall feeling is disappointment, especially given the bright start he made in his first few games at the Club World Cup.
