Chelsea fans wait to hear fate of sporting directors as more evidence of their incompetence laid bare

Enzo Maresca was far from universally popular as Chelsea boss, but he was also a long way from the most dislike figure at the club.

The sporting directors are searching for a new manager once again. The fifth permanent coach of the BlueCo era. That is a tangible, undeniable sign of the incompetence of those doing the searching.

Time and again we hear from those with good connections at Chelsea that the cabal of sporting directors led by Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley are not under pressure and are trusted by the ownership. But while their dreadful work in the transfer market can be argued over and spun in a more positive direction, their failure to find a manager who can keep the job for more than a year is surely too stark an example of their lack of ability to be ignored by those above them.

They had to get this appointment right, after getting Graham Potter and Mauricio Pochettino wrong. Maresca survived a little longer, but ultimately proved to be a bad choice in terms of style and personality. The one thing they needed was someone who wouldn’t kick up a fuss, and they didn’t manage it.

The sacking of Maresca won’t be celebrated much – new of pressure on those who appointed him would be much better received.

In other news…

There were countless issues behind the removal of Maresca, but ultimately it was the bad results which turned the situation critical. Wins can paper over a lot of cracks, dropped points make small issues a lot bigger.

Talk has already turned to who might replace Maresca, with one outstanding and obvious semi internal candidate named. Fabrizio Romano is among those who have weighed in.

Chelsea is currently placed 5th on the league table after winning only one game out of 7 in the festive period. Just imagine the position we would have been if we had won at least 4 out of 7. This period is usually holiday time where soccer fans worldwide have time to watch and cheer their darling team. I believe that all other Chelsea fans feel the way I do. Disappointed. Frustrated and even wishing Maresca should be relieved. Everyone has his peak and I believe that Maresca had reached his and had nothing or little more to offer. His team selection was now suspect. His substitution faulty. His demeanor indifferent. He was the same man whether we win or lose. He was no longer emotionally attached to results. Maybe, he forgot about the fans and didn’t care about how they feel. Chelsea is not owned by the fans but that’s where belong. We see the players and we know who ought to play the next match and who shouldn’t. Yet, Maresca always have different ideas recycling the same team and getting the same bad results.
Recruitment or buying of players has been another another problem area for Chelsea. I don’t know whether Maresca was also responsible for that. Whoever was or is responsible for this should be sacked. It’s difficult to understand why a team with so much potential and talent would fail to buy established strikers and defenders. We score goals but don’t have a Drogba. Almost all our goals are dribbled into the net. No instinctive strike from out of the box. No acrobatics or atlethism in style and play. These are what bring goals when you least believe. It’s called the extra man. It makes the team play like 12 instead of 11. We are fortunate that Sanchez has improved in goalkeeping but what can he do when his defense constantly puts him under pressure. They either miskick or fall down at the slightest touch. They perform worse at corners and set pieces. They are mostly concerned with holding opposing players in the box and not looking at the trajectory or direction of the incoming shots. Is it not when you look at how the ball is kicked that you know whether it is a spin or flip and ultimately the direction or speed of the ball? Maresca won the world club cup and conference league cup but he is now gone . I believe we should leave it that way. The next manager must be helped. He must be a manager whose transition is founded on speed and aggression like what Sunderland and Arsenal are doing. To get this pattern, you must buy players with speed, aggression and skill. We have them in Chelsea but not in the strikers position. Both Delap and Pedro are aggressive and fast but lacking in intelligence and skills. The department of defense and striking need maturity and experience. It’s not an area to depend on youths no matter your policy. You need a man that has the muscle and power to keep going when he’s kicked and the skill to outsmart defenders when he attacks. His focus has to be goal scoring and not necessarily entertainment. Get us Osimen from Gallatassaray and he will not disappoint. Refurbish our defense and it won’t be too late to win the league.
