Fabrizio Romano reveals why Chelsea “left the conversation” for Antoine Semenyo

Chelsea didn’t step up their interest in Antoine Semenyo because they weren’t convinced on the finances of the deal according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Blues were busy last summer as they once again heavily invested in the squad, especially in attack as five new forwards arrived.

The January window is now open, and inevitably the Blues have been linked with a number of players, but the expectation is it’ll be a quiet month for Chelsea.

Chelsea weren’t convinced on the finances of Antoine Semenyo deal

Chelsea made an enquiry for Bournemouth’s Semenyo, but quickly withdrew their interest after it became apparent his preferred destination was Manchester City.

Despite signing both Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens last summer it’s clear Chelsea were looking to upgrade their left wing options.

Semenyo reportedly wasn’t interested in the Chelsea project, and Romano has now revealed why Chelsea withdrew their interest in the Ghana international.

“Chelsea left the conversation for Semenyo because they weren’t convinced on the numbers of the deal and understood he wanted Man City,” he told Give Me Sport.

Semenyo has now completed his move to City, but Chelsea are still believed to be looking to add another attacker this coming summer.

Geovany Quenda and Emmanuel Emegha arriving in the summer

Whilst Chelsea didn’t sign Semenyo they do have two new attackers arriving this summer in the form of Geovany Quenda and Emmanuel Emegha.

Quenda is a highly rated winger who will arrive from Sporting Lisbon, and he’s expected to go straight into the squad and compete.

Emegha will provide another option at centre forward, and scored 14 goals in Ligue 1 last season, and already knows Rosenior well from their time together in France.

Quite what impact the duo will have remains to be seen, but it feels like Chelsea could do with more proven quality rather than more young talents.
