Chelsea have a really impressive score in terms of xG this season, but their xG against leaves them training Arsenal.
With 2/3rds of the season now gone, the stats collected on the campaign so far are pretty reliable in telling us about the different teams in the division.
Chelsea are top of the expected goals category, which we of course love to see. With 50.3 on the season, they’re comfortably ahead of Man City (47.8) and Manchester United (45.5) in second and third place.
But despite their lead there, the Blues are only third in xG difference. Their net score of 13.8 is miles off table topping Arsenal on an insane 26.6.
Chelsea need to learn from incredible Arsenal back line
That just shows how incredible the Gunners’ defence has been. They are totally shutting down the opposition in most games. They don’t even need to generate the xG that we do to win games, their defence is just that good at keeping the opposition at bay.
In all likelihood, they will win the league on the back of that defence. It’s clear that Chelsea need to get significantly close to that if they want to challenge for a title anytime soon. There are some good defenders in the squad, and Liam Rosenior’s job before August is to work out how best to shape this team to make them give away fewer chances.
