David Ornstein has just dropped an exclusive on the fee that Chelsea will receive from Liverpool for Rio Ngumoha, the brilliant academy talent who moved to Anfield in September 2024.
The Athletic‘s transfer man says that the Reds will have to pay an initial fee of £2.8m, which could rise by £4m. Chelsea also retain a 20% sell on fee.
Ngumoha moved for a better pathway, and he’s gradually being worked into the team there. In his 13 senior appearances for Liverpool so far, he’s racked up 349 minutes.
When you look at the struggles that the likes of Josh Acheampong have had getting regular minutes, even when those around him are injured or out of form, Ngumoha’s decision makes more sense.
The move apparently soured relations between the clubs, and could spark a war of poaching youngsters.

Liverpool writer for the site Andy Jones says that “The future looks very bright for the youngster,” and that “Liverpool will hope that in the years to come, this compensation fee will look like a bargain.”
Even if he doesn’t go on to be half the player that he could be, this sum will be a bargain. What’s really scary for Chelsea is what happens if he goes on to be the superstar that many are predicting he will.
