Former Tottenham boss: I wanted to sign Chelsea player but club are too ‘Spursy’

In some bizarre and raw comments that have just come out this morning, big Ange has gone in on his former club in the wake of them sacking yet another manager earlier this week in the shape of Thomas Frank heading out the exit door.

Ange has left no holes barred, and refers to Tottenham as being ‘Spursy’ with their transfer ambitions and the fact that they think they are a much bigger club than they are.

Postecoglou said on Stick to Football: “They have built an unbelievable stadium, unbelievable training facilities, but when you look at the expenditure particularly in their wage structure, they are not a big club.

“I saw that, because when we were trying to sign players, we weren’t in the market for those players. How do you go from fifth to really challenging? We had to sign Premier League-proven players.

“But finishing fifth that year didn’t get us Champions League, we didn’t have the money. We ended up signing Dominic Solanke, who, absolutely, I really like. And three teenagers.

“I was looking at Pedro Neto and [Bryan] Mbeumo and [Antoine] Semenyo at the time, and Marc Guehi.

“I said, if we are going to go from fifth to there, that is what the other big clubs would do in that moment. And those three teenagers are outstanding young players.

“I think they will be brilliant players for Tottenham. But they’re not going to get you from fifth to fourth and third.

“I felt that Tottenham, as a club, say they’re one of the big boys. And the reality is I don’t think they are in terms of my experience. When Arsenal need players, they will spend £100million on Declan Rice. I don’t see Tottenham doing that. When was the last time Tottenham signed someone and you went, ‘Wow’?

“Spursy. That is what it was all about,” he said. “Yeah, 100 per cent there is [a lack of belief they would go on and win]. And that was the thing I was trying to break.”

One Chelsea player taking a fair bit of flak recently has been Alejandro Garnacho. Fans want to see more, and Liam Rosenior has even been forced to defender him pretty openly in recent press conferences.

Cole Palmer’s late miss was a shocker – Chelsea could have had the three points they deserved had he put it away. But as you’d expect, Liam Rosenior was hardly going to lay into his star attacker, who had more than done his part in the game.
