PSG vs Chelsea FC Match Preview | UEFA Champions League 1/16

Paris Saint-Germain host Chelsea in the first leg of this UEFA Champions League round-of-16 tie on Wednesday, 11 March at Parc des Princes in Paris. For viewers in New Zealand, the match is listed for Thursday, 12 March at 9:00 a.m. on DAZN.

Game analysis

PSG come into this game with a slightly awkward blend of recent success and vulnerability. Luis Enrique’s side are defending the title they won last year, but they’re struggling more than ever this season. The Parisian team had to work harder than expected to reach this round, edging Monaco 5-4 on aggregate after a 3-2 away win and a 2-2 draw in Paris. Their attack keeps punching hard; however, opponents are getting more chances than they would like. The concern deepened last Friday, when Monaco won 3-1 at the Parc des Princes, handing PSG their first home defeat of the season.

Chelsea’s recent form is easier to read if you look at the bigger picture. The Blues finished sixth in the Champions League league phase and qualified directly for the last 16, which says plenty about their consistency in Europe. Domestically, however, the run has been more difficult. They drew 1-1 at home to Burnley, lost 2-1 at Arsenal, then answered with a strong 4-1 win at Aston Villa, and this week earned a difficult win in the FA Cup against Wrexham. The most important result was the clash against Villa, where the team showed its best version: brave in transition, dangerous between the lines, and ruthless once momentum swung their way. Joao Pedro is the obvious danger man, with 14 goals in 14 appearances under Rosenior and a hat-trick against Villa.

The key tactical battle could come down to which side handles space better after turnovers. Both sides have offensive mindsets, playing with wingbacks that can be dangerous in attack, but leave their backs exposed in transition. That’s where players like Joao Pedro, Bradley Barcola, or Khvicha Kvaratskhelia can make the difference.

Players unavailable

Ousmane Dembélé returns to action

PSG received a timely lift before this tie. Ousmane Dembélé was back in the squad for the Monaco match after his injury layoff. That is important on its own, but it also changes the feel of the attack, as it gives Paris more direct running and more unpredictability in one-on-one situations.

However, the French team still has some players out. João Neves, Fabián Ruiz, and Quentin Ndjantou won’t be available for Luis Enrique, which is a major concern for the Spanish General Manager. Ruiz, in particular, might be the most significant absence, as normally he’s tasked with controlling the game and balancing their playstyle.

Will Chelsea have Estêvão on the pitch?

Chelsea isn’t clear of injuries either. Estêvão remains the biggest uncertainty. Rosenior first said the winger would be out a little longer, then clarified that he was back on the training pitch, and finally he wasn’t available against Wrexham because the club wanted to be careful with his hamstring issue. However, Estêvão hasn’t been ruled out for Paris. He might have limited minutes if he clears the final markers, but it’s not a sure thing.

Other players who will not make it on time are Jamie Gittens, who was also ruled out of the FA Cup tie, and Levi Colwill and Caleb Wiley.

Where they play

Parc des Princes holds around 48,000 fans and remains one of the most recognizable grounds in European football. PSG’s own stadium history leans into that identity, describing the place through the chants of Virage Auteuil, the floodlights over the pitch, and the sense that every big night there becomes a full spectacle.

Chelsea are walking into a setting that tends to feel tight, loud, and intense rather than sprawling. The stadium was renovated ahead of Euro 2016, with upgraded seating and improved services around the ground, giving the whole matchday experience a more modern feel. That stronger digital side also fits the way many fans now follow big European nights, checking live stats, scrolling social media, or even spending a few minutes on online casino games before kick-off or during the break. Even so, the real story on nights like this is still the atmosphere rather than the infrastructure.

Previous matches

The last five meetings between PSG and Chelsea, most recent first, are:

  • Chelsea 3-0 PSG (13/07/2025; FIFA Club World Cup final)
  • Chelsea 1-2 PSG (09/03/2016; UEFA Champions League, round of 16 second leg)
  • PSG 2-1 Chelsea (16/02/2016; UEFA Champions League, round of 16 first leg)
  • Chelsea 2-2 PSG (11/03/2015; UEFA Champions League, round of 16 second leg)
  • PSG 1-1 Chelsea (17/02/2015; UEFA Champions League, round of 16 first leg)

Who will win?

This looks close, but PSG have the narrower edge for the first leg. Chelsea have enough pace, confidence and attacking quality to score in Paris, and their recent 4-1 win at Villa showed real bite. Still, PSG are at home, and they have Dembélé back in the mix. Even after the Monaco defeat they remain a side with more proven Champions League control in these moments. Chelsea also appear to be a little less settled on the injury front out wide, with Estêvão and Gittens still not fully fit yet. The safest call is a PSG win by the smallest margin, something like 2-1, with the tie still very much alive for the return at Stamford Bridge.
