Chelsea have just three games left this season, and they could well lose all three.
They’re not just hard games – Liverpool, Tottenham and Sunderland – it’s also just a question of where the Blues are at right now. They’ve lost 6 in a row in the Premier League. We’re not sure there’s a single team in the league we’d make them favourites against right now, and betting sites like bet365 agree.
If you’ve been betting on the Blues this season – either game by game or in long term futures – you will have not been having a good time. Bear in mind they were up to around 11% implied odd of winning the Premier League title in the wake of the Club World Cup in July.
On the other hand, if you’re a Chelsea fan who was watching the team closely as the cracks started to show back in the winter, you could have made some big profits betting against them.
The odds for the collapsing Blues to beat Liverpool on Saturday are appropriately long – most sites have us at about a 20% chance.
But against Tottenham and Sunderland, we’re far shorter. The Black Cats, who we face on the last day, will have nothing to play for. But that’s no guarantee they won’t turn up. Given we lost to a Nottingham Forest B team on Monday, we won’t rule anything out.
The Spurs game at Stamford Bridge in the middle is by far the most interesting. They will be fighting for their lives – and can potentially save themselves from relegation with a win. Given the rivalry between the two teams, you’d expect us to be doing all we can to send them down.
But this squad have looked totally uninterested even when trying to play for their Champions League status. Are we really expecting this group of feckless mercenaries to suddenly care about a rivalry game?
We expect them to continue to look disinterested, while Spurs will be motivated and fighting for their lives.
They could give us a beating at Stamford Bridge and save themselves in the process. The venom from the home fans could reach unprecedented levels of intensity at that point.
If you’re the kind of bettor who doesn’t mind backing against their own team, could do worse than backing a triple defeat for the Blues in these final games. You’d get some juicy odds, and it’s very much on the cards from the evidence we see on the pitch.
