Football London have reported that Arsenal may not be able to sign Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez this summer unless Chelsea allow João Pedro to leave for Barcelona. Barcelona have back-up options if Atleti refuse to sell, and Chelsea’s Pedro is understood to be one of those. The upshot is that if Chelsea do not let Pedro go, Arsenal could find their route to Álvarez blocked.
Chelsea’s stance on Pedro is firm – and it should be
The club’s position couldn’t be clearer. Chelsea are not willing to let Pedro leave this summer, and frankly, why would they be? The 24-year-old put up 15 Premier League goals and eight assists across 35 appearances in 2025/26 – he was our most consistent attacking outlet all season. He’s also under contract until 2033, so there is zero pressure to negotiate.
Unless Pedro himself agitates for a move – and there is no indication whatsoever that he wants one – this story begins and ends with Chelsea holding firm. That’s exactly the kind of clear transfer posture we need to see on our key players this window.
Arsenal’s Álvarez dream looks increasingly remote
Even if Barcelona did somehow prise Pedro away – again, not happening – Álvarez himself has a significant preference for the Camp Nou over the Emirates. The 26-year-old’s contract at Atlético runs to 2030, and CEO Miguel Ángel Gil has already knocked back a £129 million offer from Real Madrid, so the notion that Arsenal can simply walk in with a competitive bid and get it done is optimistic at best.
The Álvarez situation is shaping up with obstacles they can’t control. For us, the takeaway is simple: Pedro stays, and that’s good news.
