Football London’s Jake Stokes has published fresh behind-the-scenes detail on Chelsea’s confirmed move for Maxence Lacroix, with the club agreeing an approximately £52m fee with Crystal Palace – marking what the outlet describes as a significant structural shift in how BlueCo approach recruitment at Stamford Bridge.

£52m and a four-year wait – Lacroix finally breaks the curse

Lacroix becomes just the fourth player to join Chelsea for a transfer fee since the BlueCo takeover in May 2022 who was aged 26 or older at the time of signing. That is a staggering statistic when you sit with it for a moment.

Cast your mind back to that first summer under Boehly. Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang arrived for a combined £90m – all experienced, all over 26, and all, ultimately, moved on within a couple of years. Koulibaly went to Al-Hilal for a cut-price fee. Sterling and Aubameyang had their contracts terminated. Frankly, it was a catastrophic return on investment, and it’s not hard to see why the club’s recruitment team steered sharply away from that profile afterwards.

For two years after that, no player aged 26 or older was signed at all. Then came Tosin Adarabioyo on a free from Fulham in June 2024 – a deal that raised eyebrows, produced little to shout about, and quietly underlined that the need for a real defensive leader had never gone away.

Now, , the sporting leadership team have moved with intent. Alonso was promised greater involvement in recruitment than his predecessors when he took the job, and the Lacroix deal feels like the clearest expression of that promise being honoured. This isn’t a panic buy or a compromise – it’s a deliberate, considered piece of business that addresses our most persistent structural problem.

What we’re actually getting – and why the fee is justified

Let’s talk about the player, because the numbers here are genuinely impressive. In the Premier League last season, Lacroix was the only player to record more than 50 tackles, in excess of 200 duels won, and over 250 clearances. Read that again. The only player across the entire division to hit all three of those thresholds.

Over the last two top-flight campaigns, only Virgil van Dijk has completed more clearances than Lacroix – 465 to 455. We’re talking about a defender who is already operating at an elite level in England, which removes the adaptation risk that comes with signing from abroad. At £52m, there will be those who wince, but for a centre-back of proven Premier League quality at 26, it is difficult to argue it is anything other than fair market value.
