Hjulmand Chooses Atletico Over Chelsea Despite Better Blues Contract Offer

Chelsea have moved to hijack Atletico Madrid’s £34m deal for Sporting CP captain Morten Hjulmand, swooping in with a contract offer in a bid to beat Diego Simeone’s side to the 27-year-old midfielder.

Xabi Alonso is desperate to reinforce his midfield this summer, and with Andrey Santos having just been sold to Manchester United for £50m, the club moved quickly to identify a replacement. Hjulmand, the Denmark international with 27 caps, has been one of the standout midfielders in Portugal and has attracted interest from across Europe – including Manchester United, Manchester City, and Arsenal at various points.

Chelsea move fast to beat Atletico to Hjulmand – but it may already be too late

According to Football London, Atletico Madrid had already agreed a fee of £34m with Sporting CP and talks between all parties had accelerated before the Blues entered the picture. Chelsea reportedly came in with a higher offer and a better personal contract for Hjulmand – but it looks like it may have come too late.

Spanish outlet Cadena Ser claim Hjulmand has already given his word to Atletico and is willing to take a significant wage reduction compared to what the Blues were offering in order to make the move to Madrid. That’s a tough one to compete with, frankly.

This would also be the second midfield target to slip through the club’s fingers this summer, following the failure to prise Granit Xhaka away from Sunderland. With Enzo Fernandez’s future still uncertain – and his situation worth keeping a close eye on given Atletico’s broader interest in the Chelsea squad this window – the pressure to land a midfielder is only growing.

We’d love to see Hjulmand at Stamford Bridge. He’s exactly the kind of composed, durable, tactically disciplined midfielder Alonso needs to build around – and at £34m, that’s fair value. But if he’s given his word to Atletico, there isn’t much more the Blues can do. Sometimes the timing just doesn’t work out, and this looks like one of those situations.

In other news…

Atletico Madrid’s transfer activity has been worth monitoring all summer, and their pursuit of Hjulmand fits a pattern of aggressive business under Simeone.

Chelsea have also been keeping tabs on Atletico’s own players, so the rivalry between the two clubs in this window runs in both directions.
