Chelsea’s 46-player list puts squad overhaul on Alonso’s agenda

Chelsea face a substantial squad-management task before the new season, with the club website listing 46 senior players and Xabi Alonso tasked with finding room for an expanding group.

According to a Daily Mail report, Chelsea’s official senior-player list has reached 46 players as the club continues to add new signings. The size of the group leaves Alonso with difficult decisions before Chelsea’s Premier League opener on August 24.

A squad that needs reducing

Alonso has overseen several arrivals since joining Chelsea at the start of July. They include Morgan Rogers in a £117million deal, as well as Marco Palestra, Danny Welbeck, Maxence Lacroix and Jordan Henderson.

There have been comparatively few confirmed departures. Marc Cucurella has joined Real Madrid, Tyrique George has completed a permanent move to Everton, and Alejandro Garnacho, Jesse Derry and Kendry Paez have left on loan.

That imbalance means Chelsea must organise further loans or permanent transfers at pace before the league campaign begins. The club’s own senior-player list shows the extent of the competition for places, with some positions containing as many as eight players competing for a starting role.

The challenge is not simply numerical. A large first-team group can leave players without a clear route to minutes and make it harder to establish a settled matchday squad. Alonso must therefore balance the need to reduce the group with the need to retain sufficient depth across the pitch.

Selection calls across the squad

Defensive positions contain a substantial number of senior players, underlining the scale of the decisions still to be made across the squad.

The squad also contains a range of midfield and attacking options, while the new arrivals add further competition as Chelsea prepare for the season.

Alonso must establish his preferred core group. For players who are not part of that group, Chelsea’s hierarchy faces the task of securing appropriate next steps before the window closes.

Time pressure before the season starts

Chelsea’s squad size was evident during the club’s Asian tour, when the team carried a large group for its friendly schedule. The club were due to face AC Milan in Indonesia before taking on Johor Darul Ta’zim, with the size of the travelling squad allowing for different line-ups across the matches.

The first competitive fixture is approaching quickly, and the club will need clarity on departures as well as on Alonso’s preferred core group. The immediate priority is to turn a large collection of senior players into a coherent squad for the new Premier League campaign.

Chelsea have already invested in additions tailored to the new manager’s plans. Completing the work will depend on whether the club can reduce the number of players competing for limited places before the season gets under way.
