Chelsea are exploring loan options for Mykhailo Mudryk ahead of the transfer deadline, with the club reported to prefer a straight loan rather than a deal containing an option to buy.
Chelsea weigh up options for Mudryk’s future
Chelsea are actively considering loan options for Mudryk as the deadline approaches. The Ukrainian international has not secured a permanent starting place since arriving at the club, and the reported aim of a temporary move would be to provide regular first-team minutes while preserving his market value.
The club are said to favour a clean loan without an option to buy. Multiple clubs across Europe have made initial enquiries about his availability, with reported interest coming primarily from Italy and Germany as well as exploratory contact from Premier League teams.
Mudryk’s current Chelsea situation
Mudryk had not played a competitive match since November 2024 after being provisionally suspended following an adverse finding for the banned substance meldonium. The BBC reported on 4 August that he had been cleared to return after resolving his case with the Football Association and had trained with Chelsea’s squad.
That report also said Chelsea, Mudryk and his representatives had begun an initial assessment period to consider how he adapted to returning to an elite football environment. The outcome was expected to help shape the next step in his future before the transfer deadline.
Mudryk is under contract at Chelsea until June 2031, having joined from Shakhtar Donetsk for an initial fee in the region of £61m in 2023. The length of that deal means Chelsea are not under pressure to agree a permanent sale at a reduced price, which supports their reported preference for a temporary exit.
Why a loan could make sense
The case for a loan centres on regular playing time. A move could offer the winger an opportunity to build match fitness and rhythm while allowing Chelsea to retain long-term control rather than agreeing to a permanent departure.
Reports indicate Chelsea are seeking a loan fee in the region of £5m and full wage coverage for the 2026-27 season. Those financial conditions are central to the club’s position: Chelsea are open to a loan only if their requirements are met. If a prospective club does not take on the wages, the club could retain him as an option in the squad.
Interest from England, Italy and Germany
The reported interest remains at the stage of enquiries rather than a completed deal. Italian clubs are said to be seeking a structured arrangement that could include a conditional buyout clause, while Chelsea are reported to be firm on retaining long-term control.
Bundesliga and Serie A clubs have been identified as potential destinations, and two Premier League clubs have also reportedly made exploratory contact. Separately, the BBC reported that approaches had come from Premier League and overseas clubs, with particularly strong interest from Italy, while Strasbourg was also presented as an option.
What happens next
Chelsea’s position is conditional on the financial terms of any proposed loan. A prospective agreement would need to satisfy the club’s reported requirements on a fee and wage coverage, while the assessment of Mudryk’s return to the squad is also expected to inform the decision.
His immediate future is therefore unresolved, with Chelsea considering their options ahead of the deadline. Any loan move will depend on whether an interested club can agree terms that meet Chelsea’s conditions.
