Alonso confirms four absentees before Hull
Caicedo returned from a calf problem against former club Brighton and Hove Albion a fortnight ago, only to be forced off just 14 minutes into his comeback amid a flare-up. He has since sat out the 2-1 defeat by Arsenal and the 6-3 Carabao Cup win over Leeds, and he won’t be involved against the Tigers at Stamford Bridge either.
Asked about the midfielder’s outlook, Alonso said: “Let’s see for Brentford [next week].” That’s a target rather than a promise, and there’s no firm return date attached to it yet.
Palestra, Henderson and Emegha remain in the same boat as each other, none of them have made a competitive appearance for Chelsea since arriving this summer. For the fuller picture on how these absences shaped last week’s team news, our recent Chelsea injury update covers the same ground.
Where the other three stand
Palestra picked up a knock in training on the eve of the season opener and has recently been described as nearing a comeback, though there’s no confirmed timeline for his debut just yet. Henderson is in the final stages of recovering from a broken wrist, sustained while celebrating England’s World Cup last-16 win over Mexico, and is still working his way back toward a first Chelsea appearance.
Emegha, signed from sister club Strasbourg, suffered a hamstring niggle in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Bromley during pre-season. He’s been out since the Premier League campaign started and remains without a timeframe attached to his return.
What it means for the XI
These absences already forced Alonso’s hand in midweek. Against Leeds in the Carabao Cup, he shuffled his pack heavily, starting Malo Gusto on the right of a three-man midfield, 16-year-old Reggie Watson as the sole anchor, and Valentin Barco handed a first start in Chelsea colours on the left.
That selection went 2-0 down before Reece James was introduced at half-time alongside eventual matchwinners Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers, who combined for two goals and four assists as Chelsea turned it into a 6-3 win. It’s a reminder of how thin things are getting in midfield until Caicedo and company are back available, something our predicted XI piece for Hull digs into further.
What happens next
Chelsea host Hull City at Stamford Bridge on Saturday with all four absentees confirmed out. Caicedo’s Brentford possibility is the only concrete checkpoint Alonso has given, and updates on Palestra, Henderson and Emegha will need to wait for further press conferences.
