Chelsea could revisit Jamie Gittens’ stalled Stamford Bridge future when the January transfer window opens, with his minutes under Xabi Alonso restricted so far this season.

Gittens situation could be revisited come January

Football.London reported on 24 September 2026 that Gittens’ situation might be one Chelsea are forced to revisit once the New Year window swings open, provided he remains an outcast in Alonso’s Premier League plans. It’s worth clearing up straight away: the £52m figure attached to this story belongs to Gittens, not Morgan Rogers. Rogers arrived for £117m, and this is about the winger stuck behind him in the pecking order.

Chelsea blocked a season-long loan approach from AS Roma late in the summer window, with the Blues only willing to sanction a permanent sale rather than let Gittens leave on loan. No January exit is confirmed. The report is simply flagging that his situation could be reassessed if his role doesn’t change.

Restricted minutes in his second season

Gittens is now into his second season at Stamford Bridge, and his debut campaign was underwhelming by any measure. Hamstring problems wiped out much of his second half of 2025/26, though he looked sharp again in pre-season with goals against Crawley Town, Bromley and Western Sydney Wanderers.

That promise hasn’t translated into Premier League minutes. His only two appearances this term have come in the Carabao Cup – a 10-minute cameo in the 2-0 win over Luton Town on 27 August, and a start against Leeds United where he was hooked at half-time as Alonso turned to his senior players to salvage the match.

Rogers, meanwhile, has hit the ground running since his £117m arrival. Three goals and an assist in five Premier League outings, plus a hat-trick of assists in that same nine-goal Leeds thriller, have made him close to undroppable alongside Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro. Anyone wanting the full picture on how that deal came together should read our earlier coverage of Chelsea’s pursuit of Rogers, and our look at his relationship with Alonso since joining up.

Gittens isn’t the only one squeezed by that form – Geovany Quenda has also seen his first-team minutes seriously restricted. Chelsea’s attack looks stacked; their defence, per the same report, is the bigger concern if they’re serious about this season.

What happens next

Nothing changes for Gittens until January arrives. Between now and then, his Premier League involvement under Alonso will be watched closely, and if it stays limited, suitors won’t be hard to find when the window opens.
