Footballers train at a damp training ground as Chelsea manage Reece James’s injury absence

Alonso: James injury will not change Chelsea’s January plans

Xabi Alonso says Reece James’s absence will not change Chelsea’s January transfer approach, with the captain facing several weeks out after successful surgery and no confirmed return date.

James’s absence will not alter Chelsea’s January approach

James picked up the injury in training before Chelsea’s trip to Everton. Alonso said the surgery had been successful, but stressed that the recovery would take longer than two or three weeks and that the club had not set a timeline.

In a pre-match press conference transcribed by football.london on October 16, Alonso said James’s injury was not expected to affect the club’s January plans because he expected the captain to be back before then, while acknowledging there was no exact timeline.

That is a clear answer on the effect of this injury, not confirmation of a particular target or a defined position Chelsea intend to strengthen. The discussion around a Chelsea midfield transfer gap remains separate from what Alonso said about January.

Alonso’s expectation that James will be back some weeks before then is not a medical guarantee. He said the recovery must be handled properly and that the timing will become clearer before or after Christmas.

The manager said Chelsea have four more Premier League matches and a cup game before the next break, and believes the side can manage that stretch with the central-midfield options available. He did not present James’s layoff as a reason to change the club’s transfer approach.

Alonso also described James as an important player and captain, adding that he remains a strong influence even when unavailable. He hopes the defender will be available for many games once he has recovered.

James’s absence also leaves the captaincy group to share responsibility. Alonso named Moises Caicedo and Levi Colwill among those stepping up, while Jordan Henderson and Cole Palmer were also part of the leadership mix he discussed.

For Alonso, leadership is not limited to whoever wears the armband on matchday. He said the group has responsibilities during the week too, and that players can lead without being handed the captain’s armband.

On the pitch, Alonso said Chelsea’s midfield options should be able to manage the immediate run. He cited Caicedo and Henderson’s work against Bournemouth, and mentioned Romeo Lavia and Valentin Barco among the players being worked into the team’s options.

He also described the defensive shape as flexible, with the principles of distance and balance mattering whether Chelsea use a 4-4-2 or a 5-2-3. That gives the manager more than one structure to work with, but it does not amount to a wider claim about James’s position or the club’s January priorities.

In other news…

James’s injury adds to the Chelsea squad’s injury concerns ahead of the Everton fixture.

The immediate test is the run Alonso identified: four league matches and a cup tie before the next break. James’s recovery will be reviewed as it progresses, with no exact return date set.
