Exclusive: Xabi Alonso gives his terms for accepting Chelsea job; club will find it hard to accede

Chelsea are looking at a number of coaches, but the most desired of all are going to set their own terms for the job.

A number of managers are being mentioned in pretty concrete terms as candidates for the Chelsea job this summer. Marco Silva, Andoni Iraola and Oliver Glasner are all realistic names who have been mentioned.

But if you ask our fans, other names are higher on the list. Xabi Alonso is the dream option of many fans, and our writer Simon Phillips has an exclusive on his status.

“SPTC Sources can now reveal that the initial response from Alonso’s people is that the former Real Madrid boss would be ‘interested’ in the vacant position,” Phillips writes.

But Alonso “would want ‘a bit more control’ than what they are currently offering any new manager,” it seems.

Chelsea in a sticky situation in manager search

Chelsea are in a tricky situation with all these candidates. None of the big names are going to take the job on the terms they’re offering right now. But they’re tried pliable younger coaches and the players simply aren’t having them.

They’ve really painted themselves into a corner.

In other news…

Enzo Fernandez could be given a new contract this summer just to keep him happy and onboard with the project.

Mike Penders has the biggest game of his career tonight, but his development has already been really impressive and there are questions about where he will be next season.

  1. This a no-brained. Alonso did amazing work with a young squad at Leverkusen. He played (and won) at the highest level and knows what it takes to be a championship team. The sporting directors have tried “their way” of tightly controlling every aspect of the club and it hasn’t worked. Give Alonso the running room to do what so obviously needs to be done and whip the talented group into shape. With a few key signings to bring a bit of experience in the back and more talent on the wings and we have a side that can start legitimately challenging for titles. On the other hand, if we roll the dice on another young manager who has yet to prove he can handle the pressure of commanding a young squad at a top club then we run a high risk of this project falling completely apart. Our best players are already eyeing the exit because we will likely miss the UCL next year and defections will be unavoidable if misfire yet again with this next manager. Get Alonso and get him now!!!

  2. If Chelsea board miss out in an elite coach it means the owner means nothing for the club and the fans. Get Alonso or any experience and proving coach not coach that has not won anything nor face pressure before. If the owner bring in coach like oliva glasnor, iraola and Marcus Silva it means the club owners want to control what happens on the field, dressing room and control the coach entirely.

  3. I also believe Alonso would be a good fit. The only problem I see is our owners have no idea on how to own a club.
