Chelsea to battle Inter in race to sign free agent this summer

During last months transfer window Chelsea made an attempt to sign a striker at the request of Frank Lampard.

However as we know, nothing transpired there and Lampard was left frustrated.

The last minute deal is what Chelsea have become famous for, and this window saw a late pursuit of Napoli striker Dries Mertens.

It was a seemingly an impossible deal to complete as his club had no intention of selling him mid-season, even though it looks unlikely that he will sign a new deal there and will become a free agent in the summer when his contract is up.

As reported by The Sun, Inter have joined Chelsea in the race to sign Mertens when he becomes a free agent in the summer.

Napoli have a huge match next week against Barcelona in the Champions League knockout stages, and they will be pleased to have kept Mertens in the squad for these exact type of games.

But he is free to agree a pre-contract agreement with any other club from now, so it will be interesting to see how this one pans out.
