UEFA release statement in light of mass Coronavirus outbreak

Off the back of the large scale spreading of the Coronavirus, UEFA have announced that they are holding a meeting to decide the fate of their football competitions.

It is expected that both the Champions League and the Europa League will be suspended as a result of the stakeholder meeting.

But Footballs Governing body have confirmed that a decision will be made on Tuesday the 17th of March after a meeting with representatives of its 55 member associations, together with the boards of the European Club Association and the European Leagues and a representative of FIFPro.

Chelsea’s Champions League match against Bayern Munich is scheduled the day after these meetings and is already going to be played behind closed doors. But this game, as well as all the others, hangs firmly in the balance of even being played at all now.

Here is the full statement from UEFA..

“In the light of the ongoing developments in the spread of COVID-19 across Europe and the changing analysis of the World Health Organisation, UEFA has today invited representatives of its 55 member associations, together with the boards of the European Club Association and the European Leagues and a representative of FIFPro, to attend meetings by videoconference on Tuesday 17 March to discuss European football’s response to the outbreak.

“Discussions will include all domestic and European competitions, including UEFA EURO 2020.

“Further communication will be made following those meetings.”
