The importance of Champions League qualification – How much Chelsea stand to make for getting top 4

Chelsea face Wolves today in their biggest match of the season.

Champions League qualification is at stake, and as well the joy of playing in Europe’s most prestigious competition, it also offers huge financial rewards – making qualification even more important.

Chelsea must draw or beat Wolves today to guarantee their place in next seasons Champions League, although Manchester United beating Leicester City will also see them through regardless.

Just qualifying for the competition will see Chelsea earn around 30 million euros, as per a report from Total Football Analysis.

But there is potential to earn so much more, with shirt sales, sponsorship, TV revenue, performance bonuses, and of course the massive payout if they won the competition.

TFA have provided a bit of a break down of potential earnings.

On top of the 30 million euros qualifying fee, you get 15 million euros for getting to the Group Stages, which Chelsea will automatically be in for making top 4 – so that’s 45 million euros just for getting top 4.

Every club then gets 2.7 million euros performance bonuses for every win in the Group stages, and 900,000 euros for a draw.

The winner of the group will then get an extra 2 million euros, and the runner up gets 1 million euros.

The win bonus money then continues through the next rounds.

If Chelsea fail in the last 16 they still get 9.5 million euros, and for going out in the quarter finals they get 10.5 million euros, Semi-Finals they get 12 million euros, and winning the competition receives a massive 19 million euros.

UEFA paid 292 million euros in TV viewership income during the 2018/19 competition.

This is even before taking into account the extra shirt sales, new fans, and sponsorship money.

It brings very lucrative financial rewards. No pressure then Chelsea!
