Chelsea star may need surgery – but will be risked against Man City anyway

Show Sport in Argentina are reporting that Enzo Fernandez may need surgery on an abdominal problem, described by them as an “inguinal hernia.” It sounds painful.

They say that Chelsea will evaluate the issue after the FA Cup semi final against Man City this weekend.

Enzo was rested last night in order to get him in the best shape possible Saturday’s game at Wembley. Without him, the team did really well, and it may have created questions for Mauricio Pochettino about how best to deploy his countryman.

We’ve heard quite a lot about this abdominal problem, and it seems like the amount of games he’s played this season has only made things worse. The declining quality of his performances through the season have also been attributed to this.

Surgery would keep him out a while – and if it takes place now, would certainly end his season. It would hopefully mean he’s able to take a break and return in time for a full preseason, however. Leaving the decision until the end of the campaign would have a much greater effect on next season.

Medical mistakes

Chelsea’s most recent example of this situation is Reece James, who came back multiple times from injury without having surgery on recurring problems – only to finally give in this season and go under the knife.

Given that Enzo is signed up to a vast contract and is meant to be the future of this club, risking his long term future for the sake for a relatively meaningless last few games of the season would seem mad.

Equally, fans who are under the impression that surgery is always the safe option are wrong. It’s always a risk, and there’s a very good reason it’s usually the last resort. If it’s possible to recover fully without it, that’s always the preferred option.
