“It was a surprise” – Player Chelsea let go says he always wanted to stay there

A player that Chelsea let go in the summer has admitted that he was surprised the club let him go and he always wanted to stay and make it at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea as we know are in a situation where they will need to sell some players before the end of June in order to keep in line with Financial Fair Play and Profit and Sustainability Rules. They were always going to be selling some players but again, as we will all be aware of by now, it is homegrown players that are most likely to be the ones sold due to the fact that any fee they get for them represent pure profit because the club did not pay any money to sign them in the first place. It’s unfortunately but it is also reality.

Left back Ian Maatsen was loaned to Borussia Dortmund in the summer and they also have an option to buy him, as do other clubs with a release clause now in place. It seems certain that Maatsen will be sold by Chelsea at the end of the season, which is daft because he is a great player and Chelsea are also tipped to be needing to sign a new left back themselves come the end of the season. It’s all madness.

As cited by Absolute Chelsea, Maatsen says he was surprised to be loaned out by the club he always wanted to stay at.

He said: “No, it was a surprise [to be in the position I am now]. I was always of the belief to play for Chelsea as well. Unfortunately, for some reasons, it didn’t work out how it should. Now I’m here, I’m very grateful. I’m very proud of myself.”

Maatsen scored in the Champions League last night to help his side beat Atletico Madrid.
