Mauricio Pochettino will push for player with just 9 starts to stay at Chelsea this summer

Trevoh Chalobah was magnificent once again last night, helping Chelsea to another vital win. He’s started just 9 games this season in the Premier League, but made them all count.

His return from injury at the end of February has coincided perfectly with our improving form, and he’s turned himself (not for the first time) from spare part to essential starter in this side. Mauricio Pochettino won’t have been too familiar with Chalobah’s work given he’s not a big name, and wasn’t available until many months into Pochettino’s time at the club.

But now he’s had the chance to work with him for a while, we’re sure that the manager understands what a quality player he’s dealing with. Pochettino likes to remind us all that building the squad isn’t down to him, but any influence he has will surely now be used to do everything he can to keep Chalobah in the squad.

Money has been spent on other defenders, and the sporting directors want to see them play, but it was notable it was Axel Disasi left out of the squad last night. We can’t imagine they could have too many complaints.

Chelsea’s plans should be clear

It’s very hard to predict Chelsea’s plans for the summer, in reality. If you believe some people, we’re in a terrible financial pickle and will have to sell before we buy. Home grown players are top of the list to sell, which explains why Chalobah was touted all summer and would likely have gone in January had injury not prevented it.

But other sources – including David Ornstein who seems to have been briefed by the club – say that’s not the case, and Chelsea can afford to behave as normal without enforced ales.

If that’s the case, there is simply no way that Chalobah will be sold. He’s quite clearly been our best centre back since returning to fitness, and as a much loved home grown player, you’d be crazy to sell him unless circumstances absolutely demand it.
