Enzo Maresca’s stance on Chelsea loanee remains unclear

Enzo Maresca’s stance on Chelsea’s loan star Ian Maatsen is unknown, but the expectation is he will be sold according to reports.

Maatsen impressed in pre-season and turned down a move to Burnley last summer to fight for his place, despite the two clubs agreeing a fee.

Unfortunately for the Dutchman opportunities were few and far between in the first half of the season under Mauricio Pochettino and he started just one Premier League game.

Maresca’s Maatsen stance unknown

Maatsen was expected to be sold in January, but instead extended his contract and had a £35m release clause inserted before joining Borussia Dortmund on loan.

The 22-year-old had an excellent loan spell in Germany, quickly establishing himself as a key player under Edin Terzic, but he had a tough end to the season as Dortmund lost 2-0 to Real Madrid in the Champions League final at Wembley last weekend.

Maatsen played well, but unfortunately played a misplaced pass which lead to Madrid’s second goal which ended Dortmund’s chances of becoming European Champions.

Dortmund are the favourites to sign Maatsen this summer.

Mail Sport report that Dortmund are the favourites to sign Maatsen, but they do not have first option on the left back, who is attracting interest from clubs in La Liga and the Premier League.

The report adds the stance of new boss Maresca on Maatsen is unclear, but the expectation is he will be sold.

Chelsea are set to be busy once again in the transfer window, and are reported to be targeting four signings, a goalkeeper, left back, centre back and striker.

The Blues have already agreed a deal to sign defender Tosin Adarabioyo on a free transfer from Fulham, with the 26-year-old set to be announced as a Chelsea player this week.

Chelsea’s main target is thought to be a striker, and with a move for Victor Osimhen seemingly ruled out, the Blues look most likely to target RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko.
