Chelsea star will get his chance to win the Euros – just don’t expect a start

Cole Palmer only came on in the 78th minute of England’s game against Switzerland yesterday, but he was able to make a huge impact by taking the first penalty.

Given he’s so good at them, who else would you have taking them.

“Cole, he’s like an old man isn’t he? Fearless!” said his manager Gareth Southgate.

“He is a kid, man. I always say this about him. It feels like his approach is just like he is going to Goals in his area. He is just ice cool” Rio Ferdinand glowed after the game on punditry duties.

So with England into a semi final, could we be about to see the Chelsea attacking midfielder finally getting his shot to play from the start of the game? Despite the win yesterday, the Three Lions once again looked impossible slow and stodgy, and after a fairly promising first half they sat back and could easily have lost the game. Are we really going to go out with the same approach next week?

England’s plans for Palmer

We’d love to say we expect to see Palmer start in the semi final against the Netherlands on Wednesday night after so many impressive and important cameos off the bench. But if you believe that, you haven’t been watching. England have been so poor in every game, yet Southgate has shown incredible stubbornness to change as little as possible.

And, it’s got them to the semis. Why change now?

We also saw in yesterday’s game how valuable subs can be off the bench when extra time is likely (and some would say inevitable, given how England play). Palmer may only have arrived in the 78th minute, but once extra time and added time are considered, he had 45 minutes on the pitch. We expect the same thing on Wednesday.
