“There is no better thing to hear than that” – Chelsea winger explains why he could do damage under new manager

Chelsea have signed so many players in the last couple of years that the players who have been here longest tend to get forgotten and shunted to the back of the queue.

That’s very much the case with Raheem Sterling, who has himself only been here for two years. Not long ago he was the shiny new toy – now he’s left at the back of the cupboard as fans want to see their latest arrivals in action.

So time and again you hear the former Man City winger linked with moves away from Chelsea – despite him never having shown any interest in going, and despite it basically being an impossible operation. He’s on too much money for anyone to take him off our hands.

Given he’s sticking around, it’s good to hear he’s still committed, however. We suppose he doesn’t have many options, to be fair.

Sterling given a platform to show his commitment

His interview on the club’s official website today was aimed almost deliberately to show his commitment to Chelsea, and to brush away rumours of a sale. He also spoke at length about where the new coach wants him to fit in:

“The manager wants the midfielders to get the ball to you in the right positions so you can make the difference. As a forward, there is no better thing to hear than that. Being high and wide is a position I’ve played pretty much all my career. It’s definitely a position I enjoy,” Sterling explained of Enzo Maresca’s demands of him.

But above all, it was all about showing that he’s going nowhere:

“[Chelsea ] is a football club I am really dedicated to now, to try and win trophies and replicate some of the successes I have had in the past.”

Let’s hope it works out that way.
