Marc Cucurella opens up on how team-mate tried to clear the air between him and Haaland

Marc Cucurella has revealed that Cole Palmer tried to clear the air between himself and Erling Haaland after the Spaniard’s song about the striker in Spain’s Euro 2024 celebrations.

It was a summer to remember for Cucurella and after finishing the season strongly for Chelsea, he carried that form onto the international stage and shone for Spain as they were crowned European Champions, with the 26-year-old assisting the winning goal in the final.

However, the former Brighton man made headlines with his now infamous celebrations as he sang a song about the Norwegian striker, saying Haaland “trembles” when he sees the defender.

As seems to be the case with football it appears to write it’s own stories and Chelsea faced Manchester City on the opening day of the season, with Haaland ultimately having the last laugh.

The Norway international brushed Cucurella aside with ease as he opened the scoring for City, who would go on to win the game 2-0.

Speaking about the incident Cucurella revealed Palmer tried to help clear the air between the pair, but he felt the situation had been taken out of context.

Cucurella is now Chelsea’s first choice left back.

“I am very happy and I think that if someone has a song sung with his name it is because he is a top player or a world star, the name of a player who is not known would not be used,” he told Efe.

“Everyone is happy because he scored and I am still just as happy to win the Euro. I would do it again, these things happen and that is all.

“He read what they said and took it a little personally.

“Nowadays people take things very personally, but then they had some awards and my colleague [Cole] Palmer asked him about me and that was it, it was just an anecdote.”

Cucurella is one of the most likeable characters in the Chelsea squad and he’s set for a key role under Enzo Maresca this season, with the Spain international the club’s first choice left back, which is quite a turn around given how his Chelsea career started.
