John Obi Mikel believes there’s a lot to be excited about at Chelsea and said it’s refreshing to see where the owners and sporting directors, especially Paul Winstanley want to take the club.
It’s been a difficult time for the Blues both on and off the pitch over the last two years with almost everything from top to bottom changing at Stamford Bridge following the takeover by Todd Bohely and Clearlake Capital.
The Blues have completely changed their recruitment strategy, which has seen them move away from signing proven experienced players in favour of young exciting talents, although there are many fans who disagree with the policy.
Mikel full of praise for Winstanley
Whilst results on the pitch over the last two seasons have been nowhere near good enough, there is genuine optimism about the future at Chelsea.
Despite Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali reportedly being at loggerheads it’s believed Clearlake feel they have the right structure and squad in place to get Chelsea back challenging at the top.
Part of that structure is sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Winstanley, who many fans have taken a disliking to and feel shouldn’t be in those positions.
However, in comments that may come as a surprise to supporters Mikel was full of praise for Winstanley and believes there’s a lot to be excited about in regards to Chelsea’s future.
“Paul Winstanley was really, really amazing,” he told his Obi One Podcast.
“I can tell you that because this guy, the sporting director, is somebody that I’ve spoken to now, I get to know really well now, and hearing from him, it’s amazing.
“It’s refreshing to see where the club, the owners and the Sporting directors, especially Paul want to take the club to, there’s so much to be happy and excited about.”
It’s all very well hearing about exciting plans for the future, but the most important thing is how that is going to be achieved with results needed now on pitch as the Blues face a crucial season in which they really need to qualify for the Champions League.
