Enzo Maresca has been handed a boost ahead of Saturday’s game against West Ham as two key players stepped up their recovery from injury.
The Blues battled past Bournemouth last Saturday without the likes of Malo Gusto, Romeo Lavia, Enzo Fernandez, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Reece James.
Chelsea face another tough game this weekend and Maresca will be hoping he’s able to call on some of the players who missed the trip to the south coast.
Lavia and Gusto step up their recovery
With no return date in sight for Reece James, Maresca will be desperately hoping Gusto is fit enough to return to action having had to field Axel Disasi at right back against the Cherries, with the former Monaco man putting in a poor display.
Chelsea’s midfield looked like it’s lacked balance over the last few games and opponents have been able to pass through it with ease on occasions, with the return of Lavia important in addressing those issues.
The Belgian hasn’t featured in the league since the opening game of the season against Manchester City, whilst Gusto picked up a muscle injury in the draw against Crystal Palace.
However, in good news it appears the pair could be closing in on a return against West Ham with the Chelsea website stating both Gusto and Lavia have stepped up their recovery as they completed another modified training session at Cobham on Tuesday.
Injuries are something the Blues have really struggled with over the last few seasons and they will be hoping it’s something they get on top of this campaign.
Chelsea do have the squad depth to deal with the inevitable injury issues which will occur over the course of the season, but like all teams losing key players for a prolonged period is going to have an impact and keeping players fit for the majority of the campaign will be a key factor in any success Maresca has this season.
