Chelsea have done one thing more than any other Premier League side this season, Maresca needs to clamp down

Chelsea have made a good start to the season, but there’s one thing they have done more than any other side in the Premier League which they will want to rectify.

The Blues currently sit third and have certainly exceeded many people’s pre-season predictions of how they would do, with Enzo Maresca due a lot of credit.

The Italian has been able to implement a style of play and a clear identity which still needs a lot of work, but it’s a stark contrast to last season.

Chelsea have given away the most penalties in the league this season

Going forward the Blues have impressed and they have scored 21 goals in 11 games this campaign, with Cole Palmer the top scorer in the league with seven goals, whilst Nicolas Jackson is one behind on six.

However, defensively the Blues have struggled more and have made a number of errors leading to goals, which have proved to be costly.

The partnership of Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana is a work in progress, but the biggest concern is the form of goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

No goalkeeper has made more errors leading to goals in Europe than the Spaniard, although Chelsea believe he can become one of the best goalkeepers in the league.

Despite the impressive start there’s one thing Chelsea will want to rectify quickly and that’s the amount of penalties they have given away.

As per WhoScored the Blues have given away a league high three spot kicks, and whilst Sanchez saved one against Bournemouth, the penalties given away against Liverpool and Manchester United were costly.

Defensive errors is nothing new, but Maresca will want to try and stamp out those rash moments from Sanchez and his defenders as if it continues it could prove costly as Chelsea aim to get back into the Champions League.
