Robert Sanchez has done one thing this season more than any other goalkeeper in Europe

Chelsea have started the season well and a number of players have shown signs of improvement, but one player has come under a lot of criticism and that’s Robert Sanchez.

The Blues currently sit third in the league and have made a better start than many would have expected under Enzo Maresca.

Whilst they have looked good in midfield and going forward, it’s a bit of a different story defensively with Sanchez not endearing himself at all to supporters.

Sanchez has made the most errors leading to goals in Europe

The Spaniard arrived at Chelsea in the summer of 2023 in a deal worth £25m from Brighton and despite starting well he soon started to make errors and lost his place to Djordje Petrovic when he got injured and struggled to reclaim it.

The decision was taken over the summer that Sanchez would be the club’s number one, despite the Blues signing Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal.

Maresca had stated Sanchez was in the team for his ball playing ability and he’s really stuck by the 26-year-old and defended him on several occasions this season.

However, despite having some good performances against Bournemouth and making a couple of brilliant saves late on against Nottingham Forest it’s fair to say he’s been a bit of liability between the sticks.

Sanchez has made a number of costly errors and was at fault for both goals Chelsea conceded against Brighton, gave a penalty away at Manchester United, should have done better for Curtis Jones’ winner at Anfield, whilst he was beaten far to easily at his near post against Arsenal.

In fact as reported by WhoScored, no goalkeeper in Europe has made more errors (3) leading to goals than Sanchez so far this season.

Former Chelsea keeper Mark Schwarzer believes Chelsea need to upgrade on Sanchez if they want to compete at the highest level.

It’s clear that if these level of errors continue from Sanchez it could be detrimental to Chelsea’s chances of finishing in the top four, and it will be interesting to see at what point enough is enough for Maresca and he makes a change.
