Reports claiming Chelsea are in talks with Bayer Leverkusen centre back Jonathan Tah aren’t true according to journalist Bobby Vincent.
The Blues have made a good start to the season and currently sit third in the Premier League, although the table is very tight and just four points separate third and thirteenth.
Despite looking good going forward, there are still question marks defensively and it’s fair to say the defence is the weakest part of the team at this moment in time.
Chelsea not in talks with Tah despite reports
Chelsea lost Thiago Silva last summer and although Tosin Adarabioyo arrived on a free from Fulham they haven’t replaced the importance of the Brazilian both on and off the pitch.
Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana are currently Enzo Maresca’s first choice partnership, but both are young and relatively inexperienced, whilst the drop off in quality to the likes of Adarabioyo, Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi is too big.
Fabrizio Romano reported earlier this month that the Blues are actively scouting centre backs, although it’s unclear whether they will move in January or wait until next summer.
Benfica’s Tomas Araujo is believed to be a player Chelsea are big fans of, whilst they have also been linked with his team-mate Antonio Silva.
Recent reports have stated the Blues are in talks with German international Tah, who is out of contract at the end of the season, but Vincent has provided an update on that situation.
He took to X.com and said:
“I’m told reports claiming Chelsea are in talks for Jonathan Tah are not true. #CFC”
Whilst Tah would certainly address a lack of leadership and experience, it’s clear that at 28 he doesn’t fit Chelsea’s recruitment policy, and there’s no obvious signs the Blues are going to deviate away from that.
It will be interesting to see who Chelsea do end up signing and whether they are looking for a starting quality centre back or a much higher quality back-up option, but it’s good to see the club have realised it’s an area which needs addressing.
