Pundit challenges “lovely footballer” from Chelsea to step up in one way – Jason Cundy disagrees

A football pundit has challenged Cole Palmer to step up in a specific way, but former Blues defender Jason Cundy does not agree with the shout.

There has been debates aplenty going around in the last couple of weeks, with some people deciding to knit-pick around at various Chelsea players.

EXCLUSIVE! Chelsea pick main candidate for new full back transfer pursuit!

I think some of them have deservedly had questions marks over them, but seemingly whenever Cole Palmer has a quieter game, the critics come out asking for more, forgetting the fact that he is a young player still.

When Palmer is on fire, which is more often than not, the praise is everywhere. But if he has an off game, which all players do have, then they seem to be ready to jump on it.

I don’t think what pundit Darren Bent is saying is necessarily unfair here by the way, and he’s said it in a complimentary way. But even still, Cundy believes that there is this wrong narrative that Palmer can’t do it in big games.

He said this week:

“[Cole Palmer going missing in big games] is such a lazy narrative, he’s not even into his second full year of regular first-team football. Have a day off, that’s ridiculous.”

Palmer has been superb for Chelsea

Bent has basically suggested that very point, that Palmer is not yet doing it against the very best and needs to step up there.

In words cited by The Chelsea Chronicle, Bent said on Palmer:

“He’s a lovely footballer, but I think against the very best, I think that’s where we need to see the best of him. He’s such a talented player.”

I think we just need to be a bit more patient with Palmer as he is still a developing player and is not complete yet. The consistency will come in time.
