Former Chelsea striker explains why Blues owners “are laughing their heads off at us all”

One former Chelsea striker has been explaining this week why the current Blues owners will be laughing their heads off at everyone right now.

Chelsea have gone from being a very toxic club with the fan base in depression, to now being called serious title contenders this season being just two points behind Liverpool in second place in the league, even if the head coach Enzo Maresca wants to keep playing that down.

EXCLUSIVE! Chelsea ‘seriously consider’ January approach for Premier League centre back!!

Former striker Chris Sutton has been praising the club this week, and he believes that they are doing so well right now that the owners will now be laughing at all their previous critics, and there were many.

“Do they have the squad strength and depth? Absolutely. They’re able to play two different teams, one in the Conference League and one in the Premier League. That’s a bit of a luxury. I suppose people will look at their team and think, do they have the necessary experience? Maybe not, but they have the quality, they have young, hungry, talented players who are on a roll,” says Sutton, pulling out an old famous quote from one of his predecessors as a BBC pundit.

“Someone once famously said, you don’t win things with kids. Well, they are a really talented group. And when you look at the likes of Man City falling away, you look at Arsenal and I always think there’s more to come from them. Liverpool and Arne Slot have surprised everybody and I think they have because of the change of manager and they’ve been excellent.

“But Chelsea are in there. They changed their manager too and they’ve been excellent. The consistency was coming under (Mauricio) Pochettino at the end of last season but Maresca’s come in and he’s shown that he’s got an iron fist. He made that decision over Raheem Sterling early on for which he took a fair bit of flack, but he’s been proven right. They have a brand of football, a style of play with the likes of Cole Palmer and (Noni) Madueke. They’re on absolute fire and they’ve got a lovely balance to the team so I’m not going to rule Chelsea out as non-challengers,” Sutton states firmly, leaving Tribal Football with one final question; were Todd Boehly and Eghbali right all along?

“I think that’s a really interesting point. They were taking all sorts of flak, but maybe, just maybe, there was a method in the madness and they’re laughing their heads off at us all. The whole plan did seem excessive, you know? There was nothing particularly new about buying young players and develop them, a lot of clubs have been doing that. In fact, most clubs try and do it that way. It was just the nature of the spending. We’ve never seen anything like it, but yeah, they’re probably laughing their heads off right.”

  1. If you guys did your research and looked at what happens (regularly) in American sports you’d understand that Boehly & Co always knew the Chelsea “rebuild” was the right plan and that it was entirely reasonable to expect it would work. This is exactly what happened when Boehly’s ownership group took over the Los Angeles Dodgers and it’s only been the hypercritical Brits (who don’t ordinarily witness a “rebuild” in their professional sports) that couldn’t see the forest for the trees. Even now you have idiots like Craig Burley who are admitting they were wrong but talking like it’s “luck” that the owners’ plans are bearing fruits. Well, that’s complete poppycock!

The owners invested over a billion pounds in young talent knowing that not all of it would pan out, but also understanding that if just 50-75% of the players reached their potential that we’d have a juggernaut capable of winning for most of the next decade on our hands. The fans can be forgiven for not wanting to endure a painful season or two while this “rebuild” was under construction and the team struggled to win, but the pundit and journalist class (and, yes, that includes “Chelsea News”) owes the owners a great big APOLOGY at this point for the mountain of criticism they heaped on this group for the two years in which they questioned not only their judgment but their sanity. You lot were WRONG and Boehly & Co. (including the much maligned co-sporting directors) have gotten an awful lot right and now it’s just a matter of who (if anyone) is going to be man enough to say it in public.

How about it, Simon? SuperFrank? Can you at long last swallow your pride, show some class, and apologize for all of the awful abuse you heaped on these guys and admit that you made a massive rush to judgment? Or are you going to sit back like so many others and act like you were with them all along?
