Chelsea are still closely monitoring Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi ahead of a possible move for the defender in the summer according to reports.
The January window slammed shut on Monday night, with the Blues making just one signing as Mathis Amougou joined from St Etienne for £12.5m.
Six players left Stamford Bridge, although Cesare Casadei was the only permanent departure, whilst Joao Felix’s move to AC Milan was certainly the most high profile exit.
Chelsea closely monitoring Guehi
The Blues were faced with defensive issues in the window given injuries to Benoit Badiashile and Wesley Fofana, and were strongly linked with a move for Guehi.
Chelsea explored the possibility of the bringing the 24-year-old back to Stamford Bridge, but deemed a move too expensive.
Instead the Blues recalled Trevoh Chalobah from his loan spell at Selhurst Park, with the 25-year-old named man of the match on his first game back against Wolves last month.
However, Chelsea’s interest in Guehi is still firmly there, and Mail Sport have reported the Blues along with Newcastle and Tottenham are still closely monitoring the England international.
Providing Guehi doesn’t sign a new deal with Palace, he will have just one year left on his current contract at the end of the season.
The report adds that Guehi won’t take any decision on his future until the summer, but there’s already a growing number of clubs circling.
Spurs are believed to have had a late £70m bid rejected for Guehi last month, but Chelsea have a unique advantage over their competitors given the 20% sell on clause they inserted into the deal when they sold Guehi to Palace in 2021.
This means Chelsea are in line for a discount on any deal for the Englishman, whilst he’s also thought to be open to a return to his boyhood club.
It’s unclear where Guehi will end up, but one thing that’s a guarantee is it will be a hotly contested race for his signature.
