Fabrizio Romano has shared what Chelsea plan to do with Mathis Amougou following his deadline day arrival at Stamford Bridge.
The transfer window closed at 11pm on Monday night and the Blues had a busy deadline day as they finalised exits for Joao Felix, Axel Disasi, Ben Chilwell and Carney Chukwuemeka.
Chelsea also managed to bring one new face in as they agreed a deal with St Etienne worth £12m for 19-year-old midfielder Amougou.
Romano reveals Chelsea plan for Amougou
The Blues have now added some much needed depth to their midfield, which was lacking given Romeo Lavia’s consistent injury issues, with there currently a lot of strain on Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez.
Chelsea enquired about Juventus’ Douglas Luiz, whilst they also had an enquiry knocked back by Manchester City for Nico O’Reilly.
Reports from Portugal also suggested a deal was close for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Dario Essugo, whilst they opted against recalling one of Lesley Ugochukwu or Andrey Santos.
Chelsea eventually settled on Amougou, who has made 17 appearances in Ligue 1 this season, but there was some confusion about what the plan was for the midfielder.
Romano has now provided an update and clarified that Amougou will remain at Chelsea until the end of the current campaign.
He took to X.com and said:
“Understand Chelsea plan for Mathis Amougou is to stay for next 3 months, develop with top players and then go to Strasbourg from next season to be regular starter.
“Meanwhile, Andrey Santos will be part of Chelsea squad from July returning from sister club.”
Supporters are likely to know very little about Amougou, but there’s a chance the teenager could make his debut in the FA Cup against Brighton on Saturday.
Amougou will provide another option and some cover in midfield, but it would seem unlikely that he will start many Premier League games, and will likely be used more in the cup competitions.
