Enzo Maresca admits Cole Palmer is “upset” as he opens up on his current struggles

Enzo Maresca has called for his Chelsea team to step up and help Cole Palmer as he opened up on why the star is currently struggling.

Palmer hasn’t scored in his last six games in all competitions, and he was guilty of missing a huge opportunity in the defeat to Aston Villa over the weekend.

The 22-year-old has appeared increasingly more frustrated on the pitch in recent weeks, and the Blues will be desperate for him to get back to his best form.

Maresca on why Palmer is struggling

Palmer has been nothing short of a revelation since joining the Blues in the summer of 2023 and he’s once again been Chelsea’s main man this season.

The England international has followed on from his record breaking season under Mauricio Pochettino, with 14 goals and six assists to date this campaign, and Maresca has stated he’s very proud to work with him.

Palmer hasn’t scored since the 2-2 draw with Bournemouth and hasn’t registered an assist in his last 13 games, although he’s created so many chances, only to be let down by his team-mates.

Maresca downplayed earlier this season that Chelsea were “Cole Palmer” FC, but it appears they are still hugely reliant on the former Manchester City star.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday’s game with Southampton Maresca opened up on Palmer’s struggles and explained why he was’t concerned about his form.

“No, I’m not concerned,” he told his pre-match press conference.

“I’m always concerned about general performances, but I’m not concerned about Cole because Cole is a human being and during the season, he can have some moments where he struggles a little bit more.

“The problem is with Cole, we rely on Cole for everything and I’ve said from the start, we need to rely on the team. For sure, we need big players, top players like Cole, but we are not worried about Cole at all.

“Cole is just upset because we’re not winning games, no more than that.”

It’s believed there are no exit clauses in Palmer’s contract if Chelsea fail to qualify for the Champions League, and the Blues could do with their star man returning to form against Southampton.

  2. Rest him Cole for three games. Bring him second half an trust others players will score goals. Give chance to others without Cole he looks some time tied like last visit to Aston villas.
