“Something to think about” – Cundy names Chelsea ace Maresca should play as striker amid injury crisis

Jason Cundy has made a suggestion on what he would like to see Enzo Maresca do as Chelsea look to solve their striker crisis.

The Blues opted against signing a striker in January as they felt there were a lack of good value options available, despite being linked with the likes of Liam Delap and Benjamin Sesko.

Striker and winger are said to be the main priorities for the summer, but Maresca has got to find solutions between now and the end of the season.

Chelsea paid for their decisions in January with both Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu picking up injuries on deadline day against West Ham.

Maresca confirmed that Guiu would be sidelined for a while, but Chelsea were rocked by unexpected news when it was confirmed Jackson would be out until April with a hamstring injury.

The current injury issues mean Christopher Nkunku has led the line for both games against Brighton, having one touch in their box in the FA Cup tie, and he’s been branded a waste of money by Craig Burley.

Maresca doesn’t have many solutions to solve the current issues, whilst promising academy striker Shim Mheuka clearly isn’t ready for that responsibility yet.

The Blues face a tough trip to Aston Villa on Saturday evening and Cundy has stated he’d like to see Pedro Neto tried through the middle.

“There’s a number of options,” he told talkSPORT.

“I wonder whether playing Neto down the middle might be something to think about because the pace in behind. Neto’s hold up play, he’s not a natural No 9, but we need to threaten in behind.”

Neto has struggled following his move for Wolves last summer and despite showing flashes of his quality he’s only managed two Premier League goals so far this season.

Chelsea really need the Portugal international to step up and perhaps a change in position could see a change in his fortunes, and at this point it has to be worth trying.

  1. Any idea is worth a try, but I think this manager is scared to do it. So we will continue to play the same old way, why we didn’t buy a striker and central midfielder, we have 2 good goalkeepers so recall one of them. Any thing is worth a try or else we will end up back in conference league again or worse.

  2. Maresca has opened chelsea without a change in mind for other teams to take advantage of. No plan B. Same players same results.
